Moscow Chamber Orchestra Renaissance
|
The twenty-two member Moscow Chamber Orchestra Renaissance was founded in 1989 by Russian conductor and violinist Vladimir Rasskazov, and is dedicated to the "rebirth" of Baroque masterworks as well as to the propagation of modern and jazz-inflected works. Rasskazov mission is spiritual as well as musical, aiming to inspire, heal, and purify modern-day life with the treasures of the past--and in particular with the works of his hero, Antonio Vivaldi. An interesting balance to these "ancient" masterpieces, then, is orchestra's focus on modern jazz-and even rock-influenced symphonic works: Rasskazov has undertaken arrangements of works by Joplin, Gershwin ("Three Preludes"), Debussy ("Golliwog's Cakewalk"), and even the jazz pianist Oscar Peterson (from his "Canadiana Suite"); the orchestra has also performed arrangements by composer Alexander Rosenblatt of works by Leonard Bernstein, Errol Garner, and George Shearing. The orchestra recently premiered several of Rosenblatt's original works, including the rock-influenced "Beatles-Symphony."
The orchestra performs regularly in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and has toured extensively in Europe--especially Spain and Germany. They have appeared on television, especially the Russian "Ostankino" channel, and have recently been commissioned by the Russian government to record their first commercial release, on the "Melodia" label.
